Villain hitting

Hong Kong

I took this photo under the Canal Road Flyover in Wanchai and I believe this woman is one of the many “experts” in “villain hitting”, a kind of folk ceremony which in my opinion, is quite vicious :p. See this Wiki link for more info (it even has a wiki link!!). This is the last shot of a few I took of this old lady and trust me, she sure looked very upset and I thought I’d better leave before I became her next “villain hitting” target.

Sari

sari

There was this sunny day last year that I saw a beautiful Indian lady wearing a white sari walking past, the light garment was like flying in the air with sunlight shining through, it was absolutely beautiful. So I was trying to do a panning shot of sari in the busy street of Wanchai…you can imagine me waiting around for Indian ladies with my camera and following them trying to get a shot…rather like a psycho…

Princess Changping

061227as.jpg

I took this photo last night at Wanchai, and this is the giant wall banner advertisement for Cantonese opera “Princess Changping” at the HK Academy for Performing Arts. The opera is a story of two ill-fated lovers, Ming dynasty’s Princess Changping and her fiance, at the time of the dynasty’s fall. Well, it is one of the few Cantonese operas I like, tickets are about US$100 but it’s already sold out!

Link: a short wiki page on Princess Changping

(Btw, I just noticed that I’ve been posting night shots for days now…I will look for something in the day tomorrow :-))

What do you think? Was it a goal?
I took this photo at Southorn Playgrounds (hello Christine :-)) in Wanchai late evening on a weekday and was surprised that there seemed to be quite a few school kids playing. Anywaz, good for them to be not in front of some kind of screens, either CRT or LCD or plasma!

Blue skirt

DP Family theme day — a photo of a person from the waist down(like Bob’s)

I’m not sure when it started to be called “Bob shot” (not by me I’m sure) but ex-DP blogger Bob has a very unique style and so most DP bloggers know what it means when we refer to a photo as a Bob shot. I took this photo yesterday afternoon in Wanchai when, among the crowds mostly in black and blue pants, this beautiful blue skirt caught my attention . I was testing the panning effect of my camera (a recent discovery, I didn’t even know my camera has that function) and so had used a bit of panning on this one :-). Links: a white skirt and a yellow skirt by Bob; another of my previous “Bob shot” here.

See the theme day photos in other cities today:
Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later. If you view after the date (also depends on the time zone) then you may probably find the theme photo in archives.

Speed

Speed

I took this photo of Wanchai from a bus, and though it’s not really sharp it’s not bad for a night shot on a bus with running engine. Look closer at the other bus in the opposite lane and you’ll have an idea of where I was - the front of the top deck. Actually even before I started this blog, I’ve always like to sit in the front of the top deck to enjoy the view. Btw, the shop in the left street corner is a big herbal tea shop and the other neon signs are mostly of restaurants.

It’s sunny and nice in HK today and I hope you’ll have a nice Sunday too! There’s a poll about the thumbnails underneath, so have a look!

Cold?

Cold?

Of course Hong Kong is not all about colorful night life, flowers, sunsets and beautiful things. Recently, Eric of Paris Daily Photo posted a photo of a “homeless” person and fueled a heated debate on how we choose between showing our cities honestly and respecting the privacy of people on the streets. I too, had hesitated taking photos of the less fortunate ones on the streets, then I saw this scene, it seems so terribly cold that everybody seems to be turning his back to the poor one…

site updates:
– the comments page is acting funny on my computer: when I post comment, it doesn’t show it rightway but shows a blue box saying: this post is xxxblah blah, but then the comment actually posts OK…I’m trying to find out what does that
– a new “contact” page has been added
– in the “about me” underneath, does the photo load from your side, it doesn’t on my other computer
– have a look of the poll underneath :)

On a Jaguar

On a Jaguar

I took this image on a Jaguar…not Jaguar the animal but Jaguar the car; and not me on the Jaguar, but the image is :p. A distorted reflection of a street in Wanchai — I took this photo last week on a brilliant sunny day. There are lots of luxury cars in HK so maybe I can do a series, “On a Mercedes”, “On a BMW”, Audi, Lexus, Cadillac, Infiniti…Just my rambling on a lazy afternoon :-), have a good weekend everybody!

Oh Crab!

Oh Crab!

I bet it looks bizarre to you…LOL! This is a 3D advertisement built onto a bus stop in Wanchai, and the product is obviously, crab. To be more specific, it is Shanghai crab, a famous delicacy from Shanghai and its vicinity which is in season during autumn. Like all yummy food, this kind of fresh water crab has a dark side — it comes with a lot of cholesterol and is kind of expensive. But still, it has a lot of fans in HK (me included ;p).
p.s. since Dawn asked — a real Shanghai crab is actually about the size of a lady’s fist.

The dream of HK’s little girls (aka princesses) is to own all of these. Or is this dream universal?
I took this photo at a streetside stall selling all the hair accessories you can think of, and this is only a small portion of the merchandise they carry…

Wanchai open-air market

Wanchai open-air market

Ok, so we’ve got some bananas ;-), jade pendants, beach balls and teas, and here are our last stops. This is a part of the open-air market mainly with stalls selling home decorations, accessories such as cell phone covers. Feel free to browse and search through the piles of merchandise and pick the ones you like.

Tea…no coffee!

Tea...no coffee!

A streetside stall selling tea leaves, herbal tea and medicinal tea ingredients including some dried flowers, dried fruits, dried melons, leaves and roots. The stall owner was really friendly to me (contrary to the banana old lady ;p) and gave me a big smile when I showed him the image on my camera. Look closer and you’ll see some lavendar in the lower left corner.

Kids’ point of view

Kids' point of view

These beach balls and toys were hung up high under the canopy of a toy store, and this is how kids see them when they look up.
Actually, once upon a time, this could be how toys were to us, up high and out of reach…well, unless you were a tall kid or have very obedient parents! ;-)
