Farewell

Hong Kong

It’s time to say Goodbye. 2 years, 731 posts, a lot of fun plus lots of good friends…

I started HKDP two years ago after being away from Hong Kong for a while and found Eric’s Paris Daily Photo by chance. HKDP was either the 13th or 16th (can’t remember for sure) blog in the Daily Photo Family, it was a small and cozy circle then. Now, it has grown into a big community of nearly 500 blogs and I really am sorry that I have to leave.

Today’s is the last daily post of this site and I took this photo at the Po Lin Monastery showing one of the statues making offerings to the Buddha.

I will try to post from time to time but I can’t promise to do it regularly; but I do believe that you, the friends I have made through this site in the past two years will keep visiting and we’ll keep in touch. :-)

Sunday reflections

Hong Kong

Life has been so hectic since I moved to Shanghai last January that I had very little time for photos and needless to say, no time for any kind of reflections — things had gone by so quickly. From time to time, I ponder what to do with this blog. I’m certain I want to continue yet I can hardly find any photos I like from the posts in the last few months. Nothing comes close to these 2006 photos. A lot of times I felt bad for posting mediocre photos, for not writing much and not responding to footprints.

I enjoy taking photos, but I just don’t have the time to do it in Hong Kong now. Whenever I’m in HK, it just seems impossible for me to be in the leisurely, relaxed state of mind to explore and discover the images of life which is the essence of this blog. Adding to the busy life and being away from HK, it has been difficult to access my favorite DP blogs from China, making me more detached from the DP circle and fellow bloggers who can be so inspiring.

I know HKDP can last for a while, I’m just afraid the quality of posts are not how I like them to be and I wonder if I should make some changes to it.

HI, I made it! With a cell phone, no cable and without my own laptop and away from home, I managed to make a post for the theme day!

I took this photo at an exhibition at Beijing to commemorate Hong Kong’s return to China. Do come back tomorrow for more photos of the exhibition. :-)

Vancouver

Vancouver

Today is a DP theme day and the theme is “city exchange”. My interpretation is that the photo is to feature another DP city, so here’s my obvious choice — Vancouver. I’ve chosen Vancouver because 1) it is my second home town 2) because I’m on vacation in Vancouver this very moment!!

Big brother

Sheung Wan

I want to dedicate today’s post to my first cousin who passed away in Hong Kong yesterday. He was a big brother who had made my adolescence a little bit more bearable and had helped a lost teenager finding herself amongst the many siblings in a big family. He was the only big brother I had…

“365 photos and never missed a day”
This is what Eric proudly declared on the first anniversary of Paris Daily Photo (I forgot where, either in the forum or email or a comment somewhere). I have since made this my target…I’m going to say the same thing on HKDP’s anniversary, and I’ve made it!!!

This may not be a spectacular photo but this is the exact scene in the first photo of HKDP. I should thank all of you for visiting, leaving comments and sending me emails to encourage, inspire, share and makde suggestions! I will continue to post photos while I work in Shanghai, it won’t be easy but I hope you will keep visiting and encourage the contributors just like you have encouraged me.

To all HKDP’s frequent, infrequent, occasional and silent visitors, friends, footprinters, commenters:
Muchas Gracias/Merci beaucoup/Viele Dank/Ringraziarla/Dank u/Obrigado/спасибо/Takker De/Hvala/takk/謝謝/ありがとう/당신을 감사하십시오/شكرا/Blagodaria/Siyabonga

Open door

This is the foyer of the apartment building I had stayed in the past year. Just a few hours before this photo is auto-published I should have walked through that glass door and leave for the airport. In fact, I shall be back in HK very soon on February 18th for Chinese New Year. I will continue to post photos and I hope you’ll continue to visit :-), don’t forget, the blog anniversary is on February 13th!

Done packing

Sheung Wan

OK, I know this is not exciting at all, but I just want to show off my achievement over the weekend…I’m 95% done with packing. I still have a bit of stuff here and there but these are the boxes, paintings and photos waiting to be picked up. I’m afraid I’ll have to leave the poster on the door behind. But guess who it is? The first 5 winners get each get a postcard from Shanghai…mmm…Jing?

Thanks Walter for your photos!

Shanghai bound

garden

I took this photo using my cellphone at the airport last night upon arrival from Shanghai. I spent two days there looking for Jing of Shanghai Daily Photo (just kidding :-)!)

Actually I was there to finalize a contract. From February 1, I am going to work in Shanghai, which of course means relocating there, which also means I can’t post fresh photos all the time for HKDP…but I must tell you that I DO intend to continue, at least for the time being.

The plan: I will post all the photos from my archive, not so new ones and new ones while I’m not in town; I’ll post photos of my friend SiuSiu’s; I will also post photos of people who want to share their HK photos here; I will be in town from time to time and I’ll take photos to replenish my stock; I will do whatever I can to keep it going.

In the meantime, please let me have your suggestions to how this may work better. To my visitors who are based in HK, or people who have visited HK, this will become a platform for everyone to share their photos (especially if you don’t want to do regular posts or want to share less personal/interesting ones with more people).

This is what I can think of now, I welcome any suggestions from you, especially from my friends Michelle, Invader Stu, walter, Monique, min, J and of course, everyone in the DP family!

Btw, who would have imagined this when I cheered myself for Post #300? That I won’t be in town for HKDP’s first anniversary (which is exactly one month away today but there WILL be an anniversary)! Definitely not me…I didn’t expect things to move in this direction (North in this case of Shanghai) and to move so fast.

p.s. regular postings of fresh photos will continue until late January ;-)

Best of 2006

My 10 favorite 2006 photos:

Happy New Year! It’s DP theme day and the theme is “Best photo of the year”. I don’t want to start 2007 with a re-post so I went back to where I took one of my favorite photos and got this shot. You can see the original post by clicking the thumbnail above. I have chosen a total of 10 favorites from last year to share with you, but if I am to choose only one favorite, I think I would choose “Wong Kar Wai’s colors” because I really enjoyed discovering it.

I interpret the theme as the best “according to myself” so it may not be the popular ones but they represent delightful moments that I discovered beauty in ordinary things, they are scenes that I wowed right away or photos that become my favorites later. I would also like to know which is your favorite HKDP photo, especially if it is not within the 10 photos shown here or if it is one that come to your mind right away :-)

About 52 Daily Photo blogs are participating in the 1st January theme, “My best photograph from last year”, please use the links to below to visit them. Due to time zone differences and other factors, the theme photo may not be displayed until later if you are viewing early in the day.

Tribute to unseen victims

Tribute to unseen victims

A floral tribute not only to the 3,000 Americans who vanished five years ago, but also to the 60,000 plus civilian Afghans and Iraqis killed by the stupidity of the Bush administration in the last five years. Unlike the repeated replays and publications of images at the World Trade Center, not many images of how these people suffered and died, and how their families grieved were ever seen. These people existed, suffered or died as innocently as the Americans; their fate was sealed on that same day but there is no memorial, no books, TV specials and movies to remember them. I hope they are not forgotton by the world.
