A toy shop in Sheung Wan…these two boys didn’t seem the least interested or maybe they are more into computer games?

I found this interesting fact about Hollywood Road in Wikipedia:
Some people think that the road was named after the box-office success of the illustrious movieland flick, The World of Suzie Wong. In fact the road was put up early in 1844, at least forty years before the more famous Hollywood in California was settled. The name of the street originates from the “holly wood” grown around the area.

There are quite a few different styles of street lamps in Hong Kong, but I guess my favorites are these ones at one of my favorite corners in the city — the King George V Memorial Park. See the night view of the same spot here.
Today is a DP theme day and more than 100 bloggers are publishing photos of street lamps and street signs in their cities, please use the links underneath to visit.

Park Sheung Wan
The signage of a design company in Sheung Wan…is it a confession? Or maybe business is just too good that they are trying to turn some away?

I see this quite often, an outline of old style building on the exterior wall of other buildings. One can easier picture what was there before but my question is: why didn’t they remove everything when they torn down the old building? Maybe it is important structurally to the building attached to it? Maybe there are some architect out there who can tell us?

Guess who is really camera conscious?
Not the beauty, not the policeman (!), and obviously not the family getting off taxi and the old lady!! I took this photo in Sheung Wan just outside of the Man Mo Temple.

The view from Centre Street between Mid-Levels and Sheung Wan looking towards Kowloon…maybe not a scenic view but a view of local life…buildinigs, sign of a pawn shop, fishbone antennas and etc. And if any of these old apartments are for rent or for sale, they would be advertised as having a seaview even if it is just a sliver half as wide as the gap between the buildings as seen in this photo.
Tinyhands, got your photos! Thanks!

I saw these ladies burning paper money, incense sticks and other worship stuff on a street in Sheung Wan this afternoon. Not sure but I don’t think it’s a festival or birthday of a god today so probably it’s a family memorial day. They were so focused on what they are doing and didn’t notice me taking photos across the narrow street.

Another shot from yesterday. First, the beautiful bird cages caught my attention, then the owner gave me quite an unfriendly look (maybe he saw me snooping around for photos). I just felt like doing a bit of justice for the birds (actually to entertain myself) so I took this photo, putting him behind wired fence in the image. :p

There used to be shops like this in every corner of the streets before the time of skyscrapers, supermarkets and 7-eleven. Now this is a rarity. I walked past this little shop in Sheung Wan today, a colorful store front with all those products, promotion banners, posters and stickers. I also find the small “cash only” sign on the fridge a bit intriguing…did somebody actually request to use credit card in this small shop?

A bit of traditions Sheung WanBeauty and the beast? Dream and reality? Old world meeting the new? This is part of the roof decoration of the Man Mo Temple and of course the temple is not for lease. If I have not mistaken, this beauty is holding a flute sitting on a phoenix, totally at ease next to fishdraganaconda (ok, I made up that name). The Chinese characters say: Guangxu 19th year, referring to the rule of Emperor Guangxu, ie, the second last Emperor! That would make the year 1894! Click here to see the whole temple and the roof to figure out where our beauty sits.

Sheung Wan Street sceneLadder Street (Man Mo Temple. See the previous post and use the green tree as reference point to figure out how long it is. And it doesn’t end here! Lucky me to have captured two guys taking the challenge and the senior couple resting on their way down. So how does Ladder Street compare to Montmartre in Paris? I think this is the tougher climb. Any similar place in your city?

Central Sheung Wan Street sceneLadder Street is a quiet little street linking Mid-Levels and Central/Sheung Wan; function-wise pretty much like the Central/Mid-levels escalators as seen in this earlier post (
Say you are a DP blogger, an overseas visitor tells you that a certain street is his “favorite in the world”, and that place is only 5 minutes away on foot, what do you do?W, I hope you’ll enjoy this photo.
