10A

Hong Kong

An advertising billboard at Causeway Bay selling the achievements of a tutorial center, and this is how sick Hong Kong’s education system is — students are relying on superstar tutors to help them achieve 10As (high scores) in public examination. But have they really learned the knowledge? Do 10As really mean they are educated?

Times Square

Hong Kong

Hong Kong has a lot of buildings and landmarks named after famous British cities and places, and in recent years, there are quite a few places named after American landmarks; and Times Square in Causeway Bay is a perfect example. I’ll show you the World Trade Center later…

To Ham

This is a little gift to Ham (of London Daily Photo) who helped rescue Hong Kong, one photo a day from the abyss of cyberspace :-). This photo is from my archive and was taken a while ago at the Hong Kong Flower Show. Ham has an interesting series of photos on “elephants in London” so here’s Hong Kong’s answer to it. Check out LDP’s latest entry (#17) in the elephant series here or have a look of my favorite in the series here.

Just a street scene of Causeway Bay with the crowds…and of course, the signs…together they make Causeway Bay Causeway Bay!

I took this photo from the top deck of a bus while I was stuck in a big traffic jam in Causeway Bay. This shop is a popular place for soy milk and bean curb, in fact, I heard it has become a popular franchise store. I especially like the fried bean curb there…very tasty!!!! Happy Sunday and sorry for the late post today :-)

Contributors series 3
Paul Moh sent me two interesting photos. One is a recent photo of Food Street, a short alley in Causeway Bay with some trendy eateries and stylish boutiques; and the other is of Food Street in 1976. It’s not easy to spot the 10 differences in these two photos because they look too different to have just 10! :-).

Where is Waldo?

Sheung Wan

Today is a big day! DP theme day and my first day at the new job in Shanghai!
The theme: What annoys me in my city…well, there’s a list, and on the very top is “air pollution” but since I have posted on this subject a few times, I’ve chosen the second on the list: “too crowded” in most places most of the time. But of course, this is exactly what makes HK a prosperous city…the people, the work hard play hard people and the vitality of people. Well, I might as well tell you about the third item on the list is “Me not in HK anymore”, so there is blank space in this photo! LOL! This photo was taken in Causeway Bay quite a few months ago.

See what are the annoying things in other cities:

Short-sighted

Causeway Bay

I’m actually a short-sighted person…I mean I’m myopic :) One of the many errands I have to run before leaving HK is to order some contact lenses and get a new pair of glasses…So here I was, at an optical shop in Causeway Bay waiting for my new “eyes”…and I did get a new pair in red! Oh…and I’ve been asked many times, why don’t I fix it with Lasik? Well, I just don’t like to be operated on, have never been “cut” and I don’t even have my ears pierced though I have lots of ear-rings…yes, stubborn me :-)

Shopping crowds

Causeway Bay

I took a series of photos of the shopping crowd in Causeway Bay at where I took the “After the rain” photo a few months ago. It was the last day of New Year holidays and if you look at the far background you’ll figure out how crowded it was. This collage looks like a comic strip to me though I have no story to go with it…Have a nice sunday everybody! :-)

24 hours

Causeway Bay

The city never sleeps, and recently some local McDonald’s restaruants have decided to stay awake 24 hours a day as well :-) Do you have 24-hour McDonlad’s in your city? I took this shot yesterday afternoon in Causeway Bay, the mirror balls reminded me of Ed’s (Kuala Lumpur DP) profile photo and I edited the colors because Meg (Nelson DP) reminded me that I haven’t done this for a while! :-)

Shopping spree

Another photo taken at the 41st Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo. The event turns out to be a big outdoor shopping mall for locals. It was very crowded especially at the food items area where people shop for discounted noodles, sauces (oh yes, oyster sauce too ;-)) and snacks. As you can see, being so well decorated, this jeweler’s booth was not really busy.

Miss Exhibition

I met contestant No. 9 of the 41st Hong Kong Brands & Products Expo’s Miss Exhibition Pageant. Behold, she is officially the first stranger I photographed who willingly smiles at YOU! LOL! Her name is Cherry so let’s wish her the best luck in the Pageant (though it is kind of a publicity gimmick). You can see other contestants at this link.

Side street

A scene at a Causeway Bay side street which I think is very HK. The colors in this photo reminds me of some old fashioned make up kits :-). The five signs on the wall are some kind of old-fashioned advertisements, four of them are for home renovations and interestingly, one is by a buyer looking for vintage wine/liquor. If you don’t read Chinese, can you guess which one is the wine adv?

Christmas in town

I took this photo last night around 6 pm. The view is from Causeway bay just outside the Excelsior Hotel looking towards Wanchai. If you think the Christmas lights on those buildings are beautiful then be assured, this is nothing compared with the extravaganza in TsimShaTsui East which I’ll show you when I’m done with my assignment :-)
