Wisdom Path

Hong Kong

Countdown to the farewell — 2 more days until the suspension of HKDP
This is one of the pillars at Wisdom Path at Ngong Ping near the Po Lin Monastery. The Wisdom Path is made up of 38 similar wooden pillars with a Buddhist sutra inscribed on them. There are lots of interesting information on it at this link.

Good fortune

Hong Kong

Dear visitors,

Sorry for the long silence and absence of posts in the last week. I’m in HK now for Chinese New Year and here’s a photo I took this afternoon at a display at the International Finance Center showing a woman in front of a Chinese character which means “good fortune”.

In a few days I’ll catch up and fill up the “blanks” in the last 10 days; and today we’ll start the countdown to the suspension of posting of Hong Kong, one photo a day after its second anniversary on February 13th.

Being away from HK for a whole year, I find it amazing that I am able to keep posting although I’m not always posting on time. In the coming year, work will be more demanding and posting Hong Kong photos would be quite impossible. It is a difficult decision for me as this blog have brought me so much joy and friends. I’ll post occasionally, and the photos may not be all about Hong Kong…it could be Shanghai or wherever work and vacation take me.

Thank you all for visiting and I hope there will be another daily photo blog on Hong Kong soon which will show you, in different perspectives, this city that I love.

With best regards,

Lisi

Red is definitely the theme color of all kinds of celebrations in China as shown in this festive decoration of the Ocean Terminal in TsimShaTsui.

It is surely the most important thing for Chinese New Year — red packets! I took this photo in a shopping mall in Central

Villain hitting

Hong Kong

I took this photo under the Canal Road Flyover in Wanchai and I believe this woman is one of the many “experts” in “villain hitting”, a kind of folk ceremony which in my opinion, is quite vicious :p. See this Wiki link for more info (it even has a wiki link!!). This is the last shot of a few I took of this old lady and trust me, she sure looked very upset and I thought I’d better leave before I became her next “villain hitting” target.

More lanterns

Looking at things at different angles is interesting sometimes, from this angle the lanterns from yesterday’s photo look much more…pale and plain; except for the starfruit lantern of course! ;-)

Magpie Festival

Hong Kong

These is the paper tribute for a fading tradition, Magpie Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day. These colorful paper rolls are supposed to be rolls of fabrics which people would send (by burning them) to a fairy for her new clothes. Click here to see the wiki page on this romantic festival; but actually not many people remember it nowadays.

Yikes

condiments

Nothing spectacular, just the usual “army” of condiments we usually have in noodle/congee shops…sesame, sweet sauce, soy sauce, sugar (?), chili sauce, pepper, salt and vinegar. Yikes, but I hope they wipe off those specks on the bottles :-)

Park talk

boats

I know this may be a bit complicated but apart from showing these two boats berthing side by side, I also want to explain to those of you who understand Cantonese that this is how the term “拍拖” originated (loosely meaning a couple in love) — the term was used to describe a common scene in old time Guangzhou where commercial boats usually berthed in pairs. :-)

Joss stick

joss stick

I kind of know that there are many different kinds of joss stick for religious ceremonies, but I never knew there are so many different varieties. I didn’t have my wide angle lense when I took this shot but there were literally shelves of different kind of joss sticks in this shop in Sheung Wan. This one in the front says it is “light smoke” meaning it creates less smoke than regular ones.

I know I have posted this photo and this photo about cheongsam, but hey, this is very much an art form now so I am posting another cheongsam photo today. I took this photo at a shopping mall while Shanghai Tang was having a roadshow there.
