Against Nature

This is my first post showing a view of Shanghai, a view from my window and you are looking at an ongoing competition to be the biggest, boldest and tallest building — on the right is the soon to be completed Shanghai World Financial Center, 492 meter, 101 floors; next to it is JinMao Building, 421 meter, 88 floors; then it is the Oriental Pearl Tower, 468 meter. I work nearby these buildings and on May 12th at around 2:45pm, we all felt the building swaying and realised there was an earthquake. After we evacuated from our office, we learned that the earthquake was more than 1000 miles away on the other side of China in Sichuan.
That was how powerful the earthquake was.
There are not many things we can do here, but I’m proud to share with you that I have organised a staff fund-raising which has collected almost US$40,000 so far; and we’ll continue to do what we can to help those one million people affected by the disaster. When Mother Nature is in charge, being tallest or biggest simply sounds so pointless…and dangerous.
