About love

Hong Kong

A banner outside a kindergarten in the Western District — “The kid asks: what is love? The parents say: a smile, a hug, caring words…that’s love…thanks to the parents who let kids learn about love and being loved in daily life.”

Hong Kong

I have to confess, I had a lot of this streetside food the last time I was in Hong Kong, it carries a lot of good flavors, MSG, fun and childhood memories…and it’s yummy!

Nature combines with this hard grey wall to create some sort of art on the streetside.

Dried goods

Hong Kong

Perhaps you have noticed that I have posted a “shops from the bus” series to in the past few days (missing posts again :p), here’s a dried goods shop in Sheung Wan and the specialty is dried salted sausages, ham and probably salted fish plus a lot of different kinds of sauces.

A very typical neighborhood restaurant and you can just read the menu and decide if you want to go in…

For the departed

I hope you can see the bikes, the shoes and the cars in this photo — these are paper tributes that people burn and suppose the departed ones would receive in heaven.

Lion Rock

Hong Kong

Behold, the mountain in the background is the famous Lion Rock, famous for its shape and that it is visible from various places in Kowloon. The term “Below the Lion Rock” generally means “life in Hong Kong” carrying a hidden meaning of it being tough. There is also a song with the same name which touches the heart of many HK people and is considered the most representative song of the city.

Plastic flowers

Hong Kong

There was a time when plastic products manufacturing was a major contributor to HK’s economy…not any more, most of HK’s manufacturing industries have moved to Mainland China now. This photo shows another part of the exhibition showing a typical home-based business in the 60s — making plastic flowers.

Red-A

Hong Kong

I wonder if Red-A still exists…it was a household name some years ago…saying “Kleenex” to mean tissue papers is exactly like saying “Red-A” to mean plastic products. I searched on the internet and can’t find any info on this brand…

I took this photo at an exhibition at CityPlaza. This corner displays what a typical HK home of the 60s looked like…I particularly like the slippers under the cabinet…very good details :-)

The name of this tiny shop is literally “White head man” in Chinese…he works on the street in Sai Wan Ho (eastern HK island) and he repairs watches and replaces batteries.
