Life…gallery

street scene

Life is a gallery…beautiful things can be found at the little side streets or hidden corners, and the simple pleasure of life is in the little things, such as walking hand in hand with people you care for :-)

Paper windmills

swing

This kind of paper windmills is one of the most popular festive decorations for the Chinese New Year and you’ll find them in all new year fairs and temples. The fast turning windmills are supposed to help change one’s fortune for the better. I’ve never had one as I consider myself quite lucky enough :-).

Pigs of the year

pigs

This year is the Year of the Pig (or Boar?) and I took this photo at a fund-raising exhibition while shopping in Causeway Bay. I think it has “borrowed” the concept of the Cow Parade, anywaz, some of them are quite cute and fun to look at!

Peach blossoms

peach blossoms

Flowers are part of the traditions of Chinese New Year, and apart from all the fresh cut flowers or potted ones, trees of peach blossoms is a popular choice, it’s pretty much equivalent to Christmas trees for Christmas. Here’s the peach blossom tree at my uncle’s place.

Flower gal

flower gal

I took this photo at a shopping mall on the second day of Chinese New Year. There was a big area set up as a Chinese garden with pavillion and lots of beautiful flowers for people to take photos. This little gal and her companion seemed to be having lots of fun there and she actually took a photo with every kind of flowers there. Here she was with some peonies.

Risk taker

swing

Usually we can tell from the early age whether a kid is a risk-taker or the play safe type. This one I saw in a little side street playground is absolutely the former, he was having a hell lot of fun :-)

I just got back from Hong Kong this afternoon…I’ve had a very “fattening” Chinese New Year, lol, so I guess I have to put on my running shoes and spend some time on threadmill before Monday ;-)

Books on sale

bookstore

If you’re not superstitious, the Chinese New Year month is the perfect time to shop for books because it is traditionally the slowest season for bookstores and books are often on sale. Why? Because the pronounciation of “book” is the same with “lose” in Cantonese, and why would anyone want to “lose”? But I for one has proved that it is just a superstition…I’ve got nothing to lose anywaz :-)

The temperature in February and Chinese New Year is at a record high…it is so warm and nice that a good day outdoor hiking in Lamma Island is just the perfect thing to do for the holidays.

We don’t discuss religions and politics here in Hong Kong Daily Photo but I just want to show you that religious/political harmony does exist in Hong Kong.

A faithful outside Sheung Wan’s Man Mo Temple. She was folding paper tribute to be burnt as offerings to the gods. I like the gentle contented smile on her face.

Piggy

Gung Hei Fat Choy! (<-- that's typical Cantonese greetings for Chinese New Year, literally meaning congratulations on making a big fortune!). Today's is Chinese New Year day, the first day of the Year of Pig, and here are some pigs of the year!! I saw these in Cat Street and they are in fact piggy banks :-) I should have just landed in HK by the time this post is auto-published, gotta join a big family dinner and maybe I'll show you the dishes we have ;-)

Big brother

Sheung Wan

I want to dedicate today’s post to my first cousin who passed away in Hong Kong yesterday. He was a big brother who had made my adolescence a little bit more bearable and had helped a lost teenager finding herself amongst the many siblings in a big family. He was the only big brother I had…

Sari

sari

There was this sunny day last year that I saw a beautiful Indian lady wearing a white sari walking past, the light garment was like flying in the air with sunlight shining through, it was absolutely beautiful. So I was trying to do a panning shot of sari in the busy street of Wanchai…you can imagine me waiting around for Indian ladies with my camera and following them trying to get a shot…rather like a psycho…

Rare fine day

If you’re going to HK soon and encounter such fine day with clear air count yourself a lucky person. I took this photo last month and the weather was so nice, sunny, warm and dry, air was fresh and the moon was visible against the blue sky. How I want to resume watercolor class and paint this picture :-) And this image actually reminds me of a lot of the winter photos in Sharon Daily Photo.

Not very romantic

Sheung Wan

Happy Valentine’s Day! I don’t have anything romantic for Valentine’s Day but maybe just some pink flowers. This is the freshest HK photo I have in stock and it was taken at the airport gate on January 30th when I left Hong Kong. Luckily I shall be back to HK for Chinese New Year so there will be plenty of new photos and I also have a nice collection from contributors too!
