Winter solstice

Today is the shortest day/longest night of the year — the winter solstice, aka Dongzhi (the arrival of winter) to Chinese. It’s an important festival so last night my family got together for dinner. Unlike the Mid-Autumn Festival (<--link), we ate out to make things easier for mom. Of course, mom's cooking is much better but we all had a relaxing good time!

Lisi, looks marvelous!! Did you eat any tangyuan? Very nice that you took your mother out, even though the food isn’t as good as hers. Moms need a holiday too. :)

I had forgotten it was Winter solstice. Thanks for the reminder … Your photo reminds me of a past experience: I had a business contract in Hawaii a while several years ago. During those trips one of my favorite experiences was eating Chinese food with a group. We would set at a table with a lazy Susan in the middle such that we could spin the food around and share from everyone’s order. Sadly we don’t do this in my home town. I will have to make a recommendation at a few restaurants.

Hi…no I didn’t have any tangyuen, I never really like the sticky texture ;-)…eating out is good because no one has to worry about doing the dishes!! And yes Kris, we eat very “light” mostly but of course there are many heavy dishes especially for festivals…

Thanks everyone for stopping by, HKDP is on auto pilot while I’m on a mini break…will be back on Boxing Day :-)
    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Lisi, can you describe all the dishes on the table? I see celery in one dish and the fried prawns. What are the others??
