A colorful year is fading out…in 2006 I started this blog and “met” many TIME Person of the Year — YOU! So to YOU DP bloggers and all YOU visitors, Happy New Year! :-)
Obviously, you can tell it’s a lighting shop in Central :p…I’ve always tried to photograph this storefront which is covered with beautiful decorative lights but never tried hard enough, but I think it’s nice to end the year with this abstract photo.

Mongkok business

061229s.jpg

As mentioned in the “Mongkok Christmas” post, this area is hyperactive with lots of things going on as well as many different kinds of businesses. I can’t show you this particular kind in details but I can definitely show you these posters I saw on the street. I suppose no further explanation is required!

Cozy dinner

061228s.jpg

Just a random shot to capture the moment when I had a cozy Boxing Day dinner with high school friends…I just put my camera on the table and clicked after we had wined and dined and were having tea and coffee. These are people I grew up with and we are very close like sisters…btw, I wonder if that reflection of the top part of a head is mine…

p.s. HK is experiencing an unprecedented disruption of internet and phone line connections because of a series of earthquakes in Taiwan which damaged 6 major undersea fibre optic cables serving the region. It will take a few days for the damaged cables to be repaired, so I would just like to let you know that I can’t visit your blogs these days but luckily I managed to make a few very simple posts this morning…Hope things will return to normal soon…

Princess Changping

061227as.jpg

I took this photo last night at Wanchai, and this is the giant wall banner advertisement for Cantonese opera “Princess Changping” at the HK Academy for Performing Arts. The opera is a story of two ill-fated lovers, Ming dynasty’s Princess Changping and her fiance, at the time of the dynasty’s fall. Well, it is one of the few Cantonese operas I like, tickets are about US$100 but it’s already sold out!

(Btw, I just noticed that I’ve been posting night shots for days now…I will look for something in the day tomorrow :-))

Mongkok Christmas

061226as.jpg

Just got back from a short trip and here’s a photo of Christmas day in Hong Kong I took in Mongkok last night. Looking for a highly concentrated dose of HK culture? Mongkok is the place to go for the adventurous ones. It is an area in Kowloon where, apart from all the shopping centers, street-side food stalls and red-light districts, you can also find some unofficial themed streets such as streets for sportswear, flowers, goldfishes and birds. Mongkok is super crowded and good for people watching. This is my first photo in Mongkok because I usually avoid this area because of the crowds but it is also a hub for transports… Don’t be misled by the young guy looking into the camera, it’s very warm here. ;-)

Pearl of the Orient

Hong Kong is aka the pearl of the Orient for a reason, it glows! I took this photo from the waterfront promenade at Tsimshatsui East and have saved it specially for Christmas Day. The camera exposure did exaggerate the lights but I like the dazzling and dramatic effect.

Peace and Merry Christmas to you all!

Dazzling

p1140075s.jpg

The city has literally lit up with Christmas lights and as it is facing the harbor, this whole block in Tsimshatsui East is competing with the Central harbor front for grander, brighter and more beautiful decorations…and both are dazzling! You can see the International Finance Center on the left hand side of this photo, which is actually on the opposite side of the harbor but since it is soooooooo tall…

It’s Christmas eve…I wish you all a safe and happy festival…Peace and Merry Christmas :-)

Heart to heart

061223s.jpg
This is the first of the Christmas series. I took this photo in Tsimshatsui East, where the festive decorations is spectacular and it has become a signature of the area. This is one of the buildings facing the harbour, and obviously it looks extra romantic to this couple here! :-) This scene soooooo reminds me of those in cartoons that when people fall in love there are always hearts all around them…
(Merry Christmas to my dear visitors…I’m away for a few days, “see” you on Boxing Day!)

Winter solstice

061222s.jpg

Today is the shortest day/longest night of the year — the winter solstice, aka Dongzhi (the arrival of winter) to Chinese. It’s an important festival so last night my family got together for dinner. Unlike the Mid-Autumn Festival (<--link), we ate out to make things easier for mom. Of course, mom's cooking is much better but we all had a relaxing good time!

Fer whe

061221s.jpg

“Fer whe” means half a ferris wheel, and that’s what you see here :-). It is just kind of surreal to see a 50-meter high ferris wheel rising up among our jungle of buildings. Publicity says it is the largest in Asia — well, size doesn’t matter (!) and it is beautiful all the same…I zoomed in from afar for this shot but I’m definitely going to get closer and take more photos! In the meantime, take a look of this wider shot.

P.S. Don’t miss this amazing photo at Real DP!

Harbor view

061220s.jpg

18:08, December 19, 2006…the view from the ferry pier in Tsimshatsui looking towards the west side of the Victoria Harbor. What you see is what I saw, the colors were amazing because the weather is so nice and the air so clear these days. On the right is the Ocean Terminal, if you arrive on a cruise ship that is probably where you would land…see the smoke on the left? It’s from the big pipe of a departing ferry. :-) Well, I was on my way to take photos of the Christmas decorations in Tsimshatsui and they are coming up soon.

Lucky posters

061219s.jpg

This is an activity by the university student association to boost students’ morale in the exams. Basically, students have their wishes written as Chinese lucky posters (usually seen in Chinese festivals), then stick them on a display board to share with everybody…so there are messages like “I shall pass” or “we shall excel”…well, there are also “you are just so charming”, “I’m mesmerized by you” and “only for you”…it’s not easy to stay focused 24/7, right?
Links: you can make a traditional Chinese lucky poster at this site, or have a look of this one in a previous post.

Lucky star

061218s1.jpg

Just a random shot in Central lining up a lucky star and a “sweet” heart for all of you (and myself ;-)).
I’ve enjoyed the weather this weekend which was sunny, dry and cool. When you see this post I must have already handed in my assignment (freedom!); two more classes tonight and Wednesday and the holidays begin!!! There will be more Christmas photos coming soon! Have a great week everybody :-)

Vroom

061217s.jpg

I am very into taking panning shots these days and though I’m still at a practising stage, I like this one I took in Central. It’s only a half-success but I like the image formed by the green truck and the colorful neon signs in the background…so I’m sharing with you anywaz.
Have a good sunday wherever you are :-)
