I wonder where they are now after the Central Star Ferry pier has moved (see related post). I read Golden Boy: Memories of a Hong Kong Childhood (<--see link) a few months ago in which the writer described that in the 1950s, rickshaw was a major means of transport. For years, they are part of the pier; and just before it moved, there were still a few rickshaws and rickshaw men making their living there by posing for photos with tourists. Maybe I should go to the new pier and see if how they are now.
Voila une tres belle image, elle a quelque chose d’une carte postale.

I wonder how much a trip up to The Peak would cost?
November 27th, 2006, at 8:36 pm #walter, I don’t know but I think very few people have that much money…
November 27th, 2006, at 8:57 pm #I love this photo! You’ve captured such a wonderful moment….
November 27th, 2006, at 10:06 pm #Just kidding! I read that when rickshaw men retire, their licenses cease and no new ones issued. Very sad. The govenment ought to encourage revival of this industry. How about turning the rickshaws into entertainment rides. For short rides along TST waterfront, or short rides along moderately inclined scenic roads in Victoria Park, or Kowloon Park… Great too for a short romantic ride in the evening. These vehicles will add interest to the cityscape and provide that critical income for some people.
November 28th, 2006, at 11:57 am #I almost feel bad for these people… I read an article somewhere (I think the Standard) that they barely make anything. its sad how these parts of HK culture are slowly going away
November 28th, 2006, at 2:21 pm #Olivier, maybe a very cliche postcard
Jing, the walkway to be pier was very well designed actually, you can also see it in the March 28th post
sophie, welcome and thanks!
walter…me kidding too…but I have never seen a rickshaw in real action, not here and not in other cities, I guess it is a very hard job.
Christine, I guess they take about HK$20 or so for a photo and from what I saw they’re not really busy
November 28th, 2006, at 7:24 pm #Lovely shot, Lisi. I love the blue posts, the red car and the mint green roof!
December 3rd, 2006, at 4:05 am #Abbey also says: That thing is so cool.I want one!
December 5th, 2006, at 9:11 am #What I really like is the elements you managed to combine here : the traditional red rickshaw, the perspective of blue poles, the man in the middle. It is both esthetically pleasing and culturally relevant.
