What do you think the owner of this trawler was thinking fishing near a power plant? Or was he collecting samples of fish tainted with chemical wastes?
Just a bit of current issue to go with this photo…HK is a city with very limited natural resources and to feed the 7 million people here, foods are imported. One of the major suppliers is (you don’t even have to be imaginative to figure out) Mainland China. From time to time, there are reports of chemically tainted foods from the Mainland (I’m being politically correct here not to say “China”). There are frequent reports of cancer-causing chemicals found in various kinds of fish, vegetables and most recently, eggs (see today’s news here). Sadly, the rapid modernizatioin of a predominantly agricultural nation has put dangerous chemicals into the hands of unethical farmers. Now, will this post put this blog back behind the Great (fire)Wall of China?

November 25th, 2006, at 6:08 pm #oh, Lisi, That what we discussed lots recently here. It seems that no safe food left for us to eat here: fish, eggs, veges…everything is polluted. So whats the main reason for this?? I think in the mainland we need to build another moral standards inside of each person. Faster economic development in the mainland, but slower education development. Peopl now realize the important of the coin, but they lose part of the primary morals inside. It is a serious problem here. Oh, I really hope the government could put more efforts on education, not only on economy.
anyway, for weekend, i should stop complaining.. have a nice weekend.

Lisi, half of the reason for my next visit to HK will be to sample the fine food - especially seafood; almost the other half will be to pay homage to my favorite st…..- eh,never mind. Anyway, if things don’t improve, we may have to stick to noodles?! How about Char Kuey Teow? We can always get healthy organic products like eggs and veggies from G&G at Herbo Land.

You raise two huge issues there, with the relationships with the mainland and the quality of food. Frightening ! And something I wasn’t aware of at all.

November 26th, 2006, at 1:49 pm #I live in New York and there are lots of food are imported from China. The price is very cheap but not many people want to purchase. I heard that the dry shrimp has colored in red to make it looks delicious. Even the red bean. it is a shame to hear that.

Hi Lisi, we have some similar problems here and because of that organic foods have become very popular. Many of our grocery stores have an organic fruit and vegetable section in addition to the “regular” kind. Once organic catches on in HK, HerboLand will be rich!

min, what is xiao-qiang?? my putonghua is very soso…but I bet hotels in bigger Chinese cities should be no problem as far as my experience tells me…

Felicia, actually organic foods are quite common here even in general supermarkets, but since they are usually more expensive they are not always what people choose.
