Of course Hong Kong is not all about colorful night life, flowers, sunsets and beautiful things. Recently, Eric of Paris Daily Photo posted a photo of a “homeless” person and fueled a heated debate on how we choose between showing our cities honestly and respecting the privacy of people on the streets. I too, had hesitated taking photos of the less fortunate ones on the streets, then I saw this scene, it seems so terribly cold that everybody seems to be turning his back to the poor one…
site updates:
– the comments page is acting funny on my computer: when I post comment, it doesn’t show it rightway but shows a blue box saying: this post is xxxblah blah, but then the comment actually posts OK…I’m trying to find out what does that
– a new “contact” page has been added
– in the “about me” underneath, does the photo load from your side, it doesn’t on my other computer
– have a look of the poll underneath
Woaa pretty strong and sad scene you catched with your camera. And the picture remains really nice.
November 23rd, 2006, at 6:38 pm #Sad, but homelessness - that temporary condition that can befall anyone is a fact of life in most cities and towns. We hope those who are less fortunate are helped in the best possible ways.
November 23rd, 2006, at 7:35 pm #Nice capture of the solemn photo; it’s scenes like this that reminds us that we should give thanks for what we have and not what we want to have. Btw, no photo of you yet in “about me” section. Happy Thankgiving Day!
is s/he lying in the middle of the road?
November 23rd, 2006, at 10:03 pm #i wish at least the police will alert him/her of the danger. Then again, does s/he want to be helped?
….i agree with W, its a fact of life
hey Lisi, it doesnt save my detail. abit “ma fan ” ;D
November 23rd, 2006, at 10:04 pm #a part of the society we should care, a part of the real life our mind should think of it…

love b/w photo…
November 23rd, 2006, at 11:35 pm #beautiful angle… will come back…
cette photo en b&w est tres violente. bientot les fetes et les illuminations de Noël, et on ne fait toujours pas grand chose pour les SDF…
November 23rd, 2006, at 11:35 pm #this photograph in b&w is very violent. soon festivals and Christmas lights, and one still does not make large thing for the SDF…
Poverty is a difficult subject and one I struggle with. Society does not function well when there are great disparities in the population. I have come to the decision that personally I will acknowledge the homeless but I will not give them money. I do however give to charities which support the homeless … On the subject of photographing the homeless I am really torn. Awareness is important and photos put a face on the problem. But in my case I have chosen to share photos of the charities which support the homeless.
November 24th, 2006, at 5:16 am #This photo is very powerful. Life isn’t always pretty and perfect. There are some very sad aspects that we must face, this being one of them.
November 24th, 2006, at 10:31 am #I like your new site. Very nice.
Interesting image Lisi and sadly part of daily life in most towns and cities.
Glad to see your move is taking shape a
November 24th, 2006, at 3:17 pm #I was also trying to say I am glad to see your move with the ‘new’ domain in taking shape. Well done.
November 24th, 2006, at 3:21 pm #oh new look, new domain! sorry I haven’t been visiting lately.
About your post and photo, it’s great. Had me thinking I should also be posting photos that shows the ” not so delightful ” side of my city. Will be on the lookout!
November 24th, 2006, at 4:09 pm #It’s very sad to see the homeless and some actually dun wanna be ‘helped’, here in Budapest, there’s quite a lot and some are even ‘drunk’ and just sleeping…

November 24th, 2006, at 6:13 pm #Kris, I’ll see how other blogs get that “remember me” box and fix that…I too think it is too “ma fan” (troublesome) for you all…
tr3nta, thanks, and yes do come back
Olivier…mmmm…what is SDF, you see I’ll not very good with acronym
Denton, I too choose to budget a little money for a few charities instead of giving randomly on the streets. I used to buy coffee for those asking for change in Vancouver as well instead of giving them money.
Zannie, where are you? Budepest or Singapore, I’m confused
Thanks everyone, I wasn’t aware that I post this photo on US thanksgiving day (Canadian thanksgiving is in Ocotber) so hope I’ve haven’t spoiled the festive atmosphere…
November 24th, 2006, at 11:04 pm #hi Lisi, fyi SDF is ’sans domicile fixe’ means homeless people in french. have a nice weekend.
November 25th, 2006, at 10:40 pm #Homeless people usually sit or sleep in a corner or along a wall. The fact that this person seems to be lying right across the pavement makes you wonder about him: Is he all right? Did he faint as he was walking?
November 26th, 2006, at 6:44 am #On the general subject of showing the ‘ugly’ side of our cities, the answer is YES we should show it. It’s part of life and it raises the global issue of a poverty around the world.
Nice picture
