Tribute
Today’s photo is a tribute to Constable Tsang whose death last month has saddened HK and as shown in these frontpages, his official full honour police funeral yesterday was extensively covered. The 33-year old police officer was shot by an attacker who plotted to rob police firearm. Badly wounded, Tsang fired 5 shots (all on target) to kill the attacker and in turn, saved his partner. He even managed to put his pistol back to holster, then called for help before he collapsed. With bagpipe tunes, Taoist prayers, salutes, a HK flag on his casket and a police wagon refitted hearse, Tsang’s funeral was attended by top government officials, politicians and many citizens. It was later revealed that the attacker was responsible for two other murders and a bank robbery; Tsang’s heroic act has deterred more deaths and crimes.

April 5th, 2006, at 7:30 pm #the most controversal point is that the baddy was a policeman! I read that he was pissed off that he couldn’t get promoted, thus turning is anger into the very organisation he belonged to…
This kind of story should stay in the movie screen and not in real life…

April 5th, 2006, at 9:15 pm #It is sad, but in South Africa, this happens often. Just yesterday, a policeman, shot 8 people dead. 5 were fellow policemen, the other was his girlfriend, mother, and a child of 2 years. Reason:: he was jealous of his girlfriend.

The original police explanation for two dead and one seriously wounded policemen (yes the “attacker” was a policeman too) went like this.
Bad cop had a gun used in a police murder five years ago. He is said to want another gun so he figures the best way to get it, is to hold up two, armed uniformed officers! He does this in public, in a busy subway in Hong Kong’s tourist district. He times his attack to co-incide with a massive police anti-organised crime sweep, just a few streets away.
Does this make sense to you? Local legislators thought there were more than a few problems with the logic, and demanded a full public inquiry. They are still waiting. Meanwhile, the police hold a high publicity funderal for one of the dead. The “bad” cop, against whom nothing had been proved, was blamed for another robbery.
Police work can be difficult and dangerous. But we need to think carefully before we endorse fanciful stories about cops and robbers.

Siu Hang, a lot of the details reported by the media are not verified, we can’t believe in everything in the newspapers these days.
That is exactly why my post stays on Constable Tsang and not other “fanciful” details on this complicated case. I don’t even want to describe the attacker as “villain”. I believe in what the Police said in a press conference, that they have enough evidence to charge the attacker if he was alive, that Tsang did his job dutifully and oustandingly and died in the line of duty.
